Hardin-Simmons University’s Athletic Hall of Fame will add four members at ceremonies scheduled Oct. 15.
Baseball player Lynn Turner, football and basketball player Pete Murray, women’s basketball standout Kathryn Otwell and women’s soccer player Melanie Forster will be inducted as the Class of 1010.
n An outfielder and three-time all-conference selection, Turner played for three Trans America Athletic Conference West Division champions and on the 1986 team — then a member of NCAA Division I —that defeated the University of Texas (4-2), when the Longhorns were ranked No. 3 nationally. That HSU team won 38 games.
From Roswell, N.M., he formerly coached in Anson.
n Otwell, from De Leon, still holds four Cowgirls nonscholarship-era hoops records from her playing days 1997-2000 — points (1,778), scoring average (16.9), free throws made (522) and attempted (666). She was American Southwest Conference freshman of the year and twice the league’s MVP. She was named an All-American in 2000, when HSU advanced to the Elite 8.
n Forster played from 1996-99 and was a four-time ASC selection in leading HSU to four straight conference tournament titles. From Tyler, she helped HSU to a 34-1 ASC record her four years. She finished third in goals (60) and was a 1997 All-American after scoring 20 goals.
n Murray’s career dates to 1952-57 and as a senior, played in a Division I football game (a 41-14 win over Texas Tech) and basketball game (84-69 win over Midwestern State) on the same day. Even in that era, he was one of few athletes to accomplish that feat. He was all-Border Conference as a center on offense and middle linebacker on defense. In basketball, the Arlington product played on the 1957 HSU team that made the NCAA playoffs.
Two named to LSC’s Hall of Honor
Angelo State track standout Amy Bippert-Bohensky and former Dallas Cowboys star Harvey Martin out of East Texas State (now Texas A&M-Commerce) are the newest members of the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor.
Bippert-Bohensky was a nine-time NCAA Division II All-American during her 1994-7 career as ASU, She scored 19 of her team’s 37 points at the 1997 national championship, at which ASU finished sixth overall. She won the heptathlon and was an LSC track and field athletic of the year.
Martin was a multiple All-American selection as a senior in 1972, when the Lions won the national championship. He was a third-round pick of the Cowboys and a four-time Pro Bowl selection. He was named to the NFL’s all-decade team for the 1970s and was defensive player of the year in 1997.
The annual Harvey Martin Classic, played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, is named for him, and he is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Hood plans pole vaulting game at HSU
A two-day pole vaulting camp is scheduled Friday and next Saturday at Hardin-Simmons.
The camp is for beginning vaulters through high school seniors, with Don Hood leading the coaching staff.
Hood has coached three 19-foot vaulters and two Olympians — Billy Olson and Tim Bright.
